Markha Valley and Singalila Trek

Markha Valley Trek and Singalila Trek

This trip will appeal to those who have a sense of adventure and an exploratory nature. We initiated this trip a few year back to provide one with a taste of the stunning variety and contrast that the 1500km Himalaya has to offer.

Monks in Markha Valley

This is a combination of two treks one to the remote northwest Buddhist region of India, an extention of the Tibetan Plateau and the end of the silk route - Ladakh. The roads block most of the high passes for six months a year. As a result, the people of this isolated region have well preserved monasteries; some built a thousand years back. The landscape is rugged and dry and very similar to the Tibetan plateau. The people of Ladakh live in little villages in the valley where they are able to maintain small farms close to land that has been watered by the snow fed rivers.

In contrast, the Darjeeling district is lush and green with the surrounding hills covered with dense forests. Darjeeling was set up as a retreat by the British for their residents in India a little over one hundred and fifty years back. People from the surround states of Nepal, Tibet, Sikkim and Bhutan migrated here to form a wonderful mixture of peoples. To this the British left behind wonderful schools, the railways, tea plantations and a touch of the "British Raj". As a result Darjeeling has a unique flavour and is no way like any other part of the world.

Camel Ride in Markha valley

Our journey begins with a flight to Delhi from where we fly across the Himalaya to Leh. We have three days of sightseeing around ancient villages and monasteries, before heading off for a trek that takes us around Stok Kangri on ancient trade routes.

Our second trek is along the Singalila ridge that borders Nepal and Sikkim. This trek takes you through forests, villages and from the ridge you have panoramic view that stretches all the way from Mt. Everest to Kangchenjunga. You get to see 5 of the 6 world's highest mountains. After the trek you return to Darjeeling and fly home by way of Kolkata.
