Darjeeling - The Singalila Trek
This is possibly one of my favourite treks in a little known area. It is a moderate grade walk through villages and forests with superb panoramic views of many of the world's highest mountains, including Mt. Everest, Kangchenjunga, Makalu and Lhotse. Our trek takes us along the Singalila ridge. From Phalut and Sandakphu we not only have marvellous views of the mountains, but also look into Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan and the passes into Tibet.
This journey begins in Darjeeling, which is a friendly and relaxed town with an interesting mixture of the days of the Raj and a vibrant Tibetan Buddhist culture. We visit the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, the Snow Leopard Breeding Centre and a major Tibetan Buddhist monastery, you also have the chance to take a ride on the famous 'Toy Train' and wander round the busy bazaar area.
As this is a relative short 6 day trek we often combine it with our other treks - to make a holiday that offers a lot of variety. A good combination is with a trek to Guiche-la or the Green Lake in Sikkim - which gets you close to Kangchenjunga or to Mt. Everest Base Camp in Nepal or even with a trek in Ladakh in northwest India. The highest point you get on this trek is 3636m and we grade it as a moderate grade.
